The Baby Files – Review

One of the first things I searched high and low for when we found out we were going to be Mummies was a baby book. Not that big a deal you may think, just pick your favourite and off you go! Wrong. As a same-sex couple it was impossible to find a baby book that didn’t include the word “Daddy” a word that we (for obvious reasons) avoid in our house. Sure we could have bought one and scored out every mention of the “D word” but that seemed like a lot of effort to go to. Not to mention it would take away from the aesthetics of the book, and tarnish our precious first memories. The only books that were inclusive cost a small fortune, something we just couldn’t afford.

We had given up hope of having a baby book for Callie so when I was given the chance to review “The Baby Files” I was beyond excited! Cant believe my luck, jumping up and down excited (yeah I’m a nerd, lets move on).

The Baby Files is a beautifully presented, quirky and colourful book that helps ALL families, regardless of their makeup, to document the first year of their precious baby’s life. As soon as I opened the first page I fell in love with it. Actually- strike that. As soon as I saw the cover I fell in love. I know they say don’t judge a book by its cover, but this one really captures the essence of the book and I couldn’t wait to get stuck in.

The book itself gives you a brilliant template to start off recording your memories but leaves room for you to be as creative as you want to be. Each page is beautifully illustrated and unique and is a complete breath of fresh air. Too many of the baby books I originally looked at all seemed to be the same. Soft baby blue’s and pinks, which is nice but if you’re looking for something a little bit different (and by different I mean amazing) then this is the book for you!

Alisa Yingling created “The Baby Files” for her brother and brother-in-law when they were going through the adoption process. She (like me) searched for an inclusive baby book but when she couldn’t find one, she made her own! I would love to thank her for creating such a lovely book and helping us record our memories as easily as any other couple would.

I love that this book will give us the opportunity to look back fondly on our first year with Callie and allow us to give her a snapshot of how life was with her in our early days. (Plus who doesn’t love a lion riding a bike? Am I right??)

Perhaps the only downside to this book is we will have to share with her that a giant wotsit in a wig was the leader of the Free World. Although, it just goes to show anyone, (and I do mean anyone!) can be anything they want, if only they have lots and lots of money….

Although hopefully by the time she can understand all that, it will just be a really bad memory for us.

This book has allowed me to document the most amazing moments of our life and I often find myself picking it up and looking through it with pride. I almost can’t believe how much has happened in the past 9 months but this book really has helped my addled baby brain remember the best of times. I couldn’t recommend it enough to any couple but especially to those who aren’t your “typical” family.
